How to Enjoy the Holiday SeasonThe political landscape is changing. Our economy is showing signs of life. President Obama's poll numbers are rising. GOP fire-breather Newt Gingrich's poll numbers are looking shaky. And Ron Paul, a libertarian gadfly ignored by the press and despised by Republican old-timers, is riding high in Iowa, the site of next month's GOP caucuses. How did that happen? It happened because Rep. Paul's take-no-prisoners brand of conservatism is catching on. Want to shrink government? Paul vows to slash $1 trillion from the federal budget his first year in the White House.
Want to rein in federal snooping? Paul rails against the Patriot Act, the failed "war on drugs" and congressional attempts to regulate marriage. Want a more modest foreign policy? Paul rejects calls for war with Iran and wants to shut down overseas military bases. This frazzles GOP hawks, but it follows the Founders' advice to avoid foreign entanglements. Polls at the end of last week put Paul atop the heap in Iowa. Maybe now the press and the Republican establishment will pay attention to his message.
