Teen Developing Too Early?

Share Comment

Hey, Cherie!

I have a problem that I doubt you can help with, but I still want your advice. I am almost 12 years old, and I have started developing way before my friends. Like I have been wearing a real bra since school last year, and my breasts keep growing! Like really fast — ridiculously fast. My mother says that the same thing happened to my aunt when they were kids, and she has a humongous chest now! Cherie, I am getting stared at all the time now and not just by boys at school. Even grown ups are looking at me more than my friends. Oh, yeah and my friends? They treat me like I'm a freak or worse, that I made this happen to myself and I am enjoying it?! Why would I ever want this to happen on purpose? Why would I purposely want all this attention? That's crazy, 'cause I don't. My parents say that it's nature and that I am blessed with a healthy body and all that stuff. But I am the one who has the big boobs and everyone has to make me feel strange because of it.

—Big Boob Doomed

Hey Big!

Oh girl, I know exactly how you feel! All this attention for something you really didn't cause to happen? I went through something similar when I was your age. I know it can be so hard to act like nothing has changed, when its right there in front of you, and that yeah, something has really grown in a short period of time.

I am so glad that you can talk to your parents about it. Maybe you and your mom can look for a couple shirts that don't call attention to you? There are several styles that you can wear that will make you feel comfortable if there is a high neckline.

The most important thing I think is that you understand this is not something you should ever feel ashamed about. Your folks are right! Its nature, and you are blessed and healthy. It may confuse some others and make them even more jealous because they don't fill out a dress they way you do ... but what is really important here? How you look or how you feel about yourself? This growing thing you are in now? It does not last forever. And if they are fortunate, your friends are growing and changing, too. Boys have changes to their voices, and their bodies go through a lot, too. Noticing you and your "new development" is only one part of it. I hope you can keep in mind that this is natural, that you are so special and these changes happen to every kid in different ways. Good luck!

Dear Big - that was my story, too. I kept trying out for cheerleader, and I'm sure all that bouncing around was rather vulger looking and never made the team. But it won't always be this way. I used to hurt so much from the weight, and the bra straps would cut into my shoulders. Finally, at age 40, I gave up and because it was affecting my health, insurance covered a breast reduction. I had never had any kind of surgery, and put it off out of fear, but looking back, it was the best thing I have ever done for myself. You might need to wait until your body has more fully grown, but no harm in researching it with a good plastic surgeon now. It's a big inconvenience, shop online as the stores don't carry larger sizes, but don't give up hope - one way or another, you'll be YOUR perfect size someday.

The reason you're developing early is that the hormones are kicking in early. This happens mainly to kids with a high-fat diet or kids who are fatherless (they're called "Hox" genes, look them up on the web). Sometimes it can happen for no apparent reason.
One way to put the breaks on puberty is EXERCIZE!!!!! Kids who are extremely athletic generally go through puberty late, plus they remain healthy later in life. Girls who develop early have a higher risk of breast cancer and osteoperosis. So go out there an run, take karate lessons, ride your bike, learn to box, etc. You'll need to keep the muscles in your back as strong as you can, to take the weight of your oversized bust. You might also consider giving up all sodas, processed foods, and processed meats, because the meat could be hormone treated.

Dole: Why don't you take it a step forward and suggest she develop an eating disorder? LOL I'm sure everyone will be relieved to know that to avoid big boobs you need to eat healthy, exercise and find a father. Awesome.
